Timberline Trail

Rated as one of the 10 best backpacking trips in Oregon by OregonLive’s Terry Richard is the Timberline Trail. Chosen for outstanding scenery, variety of terrain and convenient trail access. Read details about this trail below.

If the trail is ever reopened, every Portland backpacker should hike this 40-mile loop around Mount Hood. I did it three times before the storm damage.
Begin at Cloud Cap, Timberline Lodge or the Sandy River, the only places where roads meet the trail. The ever-changing face of Oregon’s highest mountain makes the 10,000 feet of elevation change worth every ache and pain. The Eliot Creek crossing just east of Cloud Cap is no longer passable.
